The first and most important lie I feel the need to expose is that you are stuck. People say this many different ways:
“I was born this way.”
“I can’t change. I’ve tried.”
“It’s in my genes. My mother and my grandmother were this way too.”
You may have heard all of these phrases too. You may have said them yourself. There was a time when I said similar things. But I have since learned the truth, and the truth is that you can change. You are not stuck. No one is stuck. Everyone has the choice to do something different. James Faust, an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said this: “Each one of us has been given the power to change his or her life. As part of the Lord’s great plan of happiness, we have individual agency to make decisions.” (For the full article, click here.)
If you believe in Jesus Christ and in his Atonement, you already know this is possible and that he has made it possible. Quoting James Faust again: “If we will turn to the Lord and believe on His name, we can change. He will give us the power to change our lives, the power to put away bad thoughts and feelings from our hearts. We can be taken from ‘the darkest abyss’ to ‘behold the marvelous light of God’ (quoted from Book of Mormon, Mosiah 27:29). We can be forgiven. We can find peace.”
Religion aside, you can still make changes in your life, even about the things that seem impossible to change. Just believing that you can change, just saying that phrase out loud to yourself, empowers you with the possibility. Author Carol Tuttle has written in her book Remembering Wholeness, “Each of us has the freedom to choose perceptions of our life experiences and the world around us that support us in feeling good all the time. Each of us has the power to change how we feel instantly.”
The first thing you have the power to change are your thoughts. If you feel like you are stuck, what is it that you are saying to yourself? Are you giving yourself permission to change, or are the messages you are sending to yourself about being stuck and feeling helpless and powerless? Tell yourself that you can change, that change is possible, and it will be. It will open your mind to new possibilities.
“If you don’t like who you are and where you are, don’t worry about it because you’re not stuck either with who you are or where you are. You can grow. You can change. You can be more than you are.” (Zig Ziglar, author and motivational speaker)
Have the courage to believe that if you don’t like who you are, if you don’t like something about your life, you have the power to change it!
